MAYFIELD HEIGHTS -- Solon Police located the suspect involved in the triple stabbing that happened on Golden Gate Boulevard.

Police caught the suspect on state Route 422.

State Route 422 was closed for three hours between state Route 91 and Harper Road Monday morning. It reopened about 10:45 a.m., according to Solon police.

Just after 7:30 a.m., while trying to escape police K-9s, police say the suspect, Michaerl Cepik, ran onto 422 and was struck by a box truck.

The Mayfield Heights victims were taken to Hillcrest Hospital. One of the victims, identified as a man, is in surgery, while the two women are in stable condition.

As of noon, their identities have not been released.

Mayfield Heights police were sent to 1400 Golden Gate Boulevard just before 5 a.m. Monday following a 911 call.

Police at a late morning press conference said that Matthew Cepik broke into the victims' home, where he stabbed the mother, daughter and a family friend.

In the official press release, just before 6 a.m., Solon police located Cepik's white Kia Optima in the parking lot at 5525 Harper Road, just off Route 422.

Solon police said they were notified of the search around 5:30 a.m. when Mayfield Heights officers picked up the signal from the Cepik's cellphone.

A Solon K-9 and a Glenwillow K-9 were sent to the area of state Route 422 and tracked Cepik to a wooded area.

With police K-9s chasing him, Cepik deliberately ran onto 422 and was struck by a box truck near Harper Road.

Mayfield Heights police say Cepik is now in critical condition and under guard at Hillcrest Hospital.

Browns LB Mingo returns to practice

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Browns rookie linebacker Barkevious Mingo returned to practice in a limited role, a significant step in his recovery from a bruised lung.

Mingo was injured in an Aug. 15 game against Detroit and hospitalized for two days.

The first-round draft pick took part in position drills on Monday, but did not have any contact in the portion of practice open to reporters.

It's still not known if Mingo will be able to play Sunday when the Browns open the 2013 season at home against Miami.

Mingo was restricted to riding a stationary bike, some running and light weightlifting last week, so his appearance on the field is a sign he's made good progress.

The Browns plan to use the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft as an outside pass rusher.

British broadcaster David Frost dies of heart attack

LONDON -- Veteran British journalist and broadcaster David Frost, who won fame around the world for his TV interviews with former president Richard Nixon, has died, his family told the BBC.

He was 74.

Frost died of a suspected heart attack on Saturday night aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was due to give a speech, the family said.

The cruise company Cunard said its vessel left the English port of Southampton on Saturday for a 10-day cruise in the Mediterranean. Known both for an amiable personality and incisive interviews with leading public figures, Frost's career in television news and entertainment spanned almost half a century.

He was the only person to have interviewed all six British prime ministers serving between 1964 and 2007 and the seven U.S. presidents in office between 1969 and 2008.

Outside world affairs, his roster ranged from Orson Welles to Muhammad Ali to Clint Eastwood. Prime Minister David Cameron was quick to send his condolences, praising Frost for being an "extraordinary man with charm, wit, talent, intelligence and warmth in equal measure."

"The Nixon interviews were among the great broadcast moments - but there were many other brilliant interviews," Cameron said. "He could be - and certainly was with me - both a friend and a fearsome interviewer."

The BBC said it received a statement from Frost's family saying it was devastated and asking "for privacy at this difficult time." Frost began television hosting while still a student at Cambridge University.

He went on to host the BBC's satirical news show The Week That Was in the early 1960s, and, later, a sketch show called The Frost Report and a long-running BBC Sunday show, Breakfast With Frost.

His signature, "Hello, good evening and welcome" was often mimicked. While popular in Britain and beginning to launch a career on U.S. television, Frost did not become internationally known until 1977, when he secured a series of television interviews with Nixon.

The interview was make-or-break both for him and for the ex-president, who was trying to salvage his reputation after resigning from the White House in disgrace following the Watergate scandal three years earlier.

At the time, it was the most widely watched news interview in the history of TV. The interviewer and his subject sparred through the first part of the interview, but Frost later said he realized he didn't have what he wanted as it wound down. Nixon had acknowledged mistakes, but Frost pressed him on whether that was enough.

Americans, he said, wanted to hear him own up to wrongdoing and acknowledge abuse of power - and "unless you say it, you're going to be haunted for the rest of your life." "That was totally off-the-cuff," Frost later said. "That was totally ad-lib. In fact, I threw my clipboard down just to indicate that it was not prepared in any way. ... I just knew at that moment that Richard Nixon was more vulnerable than he'd ever be in his life. And I knew I had to get it right."

After more pressing, Nixon relented. "I let the American people down and I have to carry that burden with me for the rest of my life," he said. The dramatic faceoff went on to spawn a hit play. And in 2008, a new generation was introduced to Frost's work with the Oscar-nominated movie Frost/Nixon, starring Michael Sheen as Frost and Frank Langella as Nixon.

Frost was born on April 7, 1939, the son of a Methodist preacher. Besides hosting, he set up his own company, which gave birth to many more popular British programs. Breakfast With Frost ran on the BBC for 12 years until 2005, and the game show Through the Keyhole from 1987 to 2008. He had recently been working for Al Jazeera International.

Between the Lines: Explaining new school report cards

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

The old descriptive but vague terms of "excellent with distinction" and "continuous improvement" are gone.

Ohio's remade report cards toss out the familiar rating system.

They are replaced with an A through F grading system in nine separate areas.

The new system is being touted as more accurate. But as with any change, there's also confusion.

The report cards offer a clearer picture of systems' strong and weak points dealing with all kinds of students.

Some traditionally top-rated systems were chagrined to see D's and F's.

The state says most parents have seen A through F systems most of their own lives and understand the ranking.

But districts are concerned about the lack of an overall grade.

How should parents and taxpayers regard the new rankings?

How will this result in improvements?

With nine letter grades, which ones should parents focus on?

Which is better a district that ranks strongly on tests, but barely improves or one that still performs poorly but is doing better?

And what does the state expect from the new Cleveland Schools transformation plan?

WKYC's Tom Beres, Democratic former Mayor of Shaker Heights Judy Rawson and Republican former State Representative Matt Dolan discuss these issues with State School Superintendent Dr. Richard Ross on this edition of Between the Lines.

Mansfield celebrates 'Shawshank Redemption' anniversary

MANSFIELD -- "The Shawshank Redemption" turned the spotlight on Mansfield in the summer of 1993 and the city is gearing up for the 20th anniversary of the filming this weekend.

PHOTOS | Inside Mansfield Reformatory's haunted experience

Twenty years ago this summer, "The Shawshank Redemption," starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, was filmed throughout Mansfield and north central Ohio.

The 20th Shawshank Reunion is expected to draw plenty of fans to Mansfield.

More than 1,000 north central Ohioans snared roles as extras in the film, while another 75 landed speaking parts.

Ben Bissman, who owns the historic Bissman Building where the film's Brewer Hotel and Portland Daily Bugle scenes were filmed, said the film has "brought a sense of community and a sense of pride, something Mansfield desperately needs.

"I got to meet James Whitmore," Bissman said. "He was just a really cool guy."

Virginia Imhoff, a longtime board member of the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society, said the film has made Mansfield known all over the world.

She said she went to a dinner party in Dubai and a man came up to her and said, "Tell me about 'Shawshank.'"

She said visitors from Mansfield, England, always want to visit the Ohio State Reformatory, where much of the movie was filmed.

The reunion celebration will include actor appearances and tours showcasing locations used in the film in Mansfield, Lucas, Ashland and Upper Sandusky. Bob Gunton, who played Warden Norton, is expected to attend.

Featured locations include the Ohio State Reformatory, used as Shawshank State Prison; the film's bank; courtroom; and what's now known locally as the Shawshank Oak Tree, on private property across from Malabar Farm State Park.

The Ohio State Reformatory opened in 1896 and housed more than 155,000 inmates before it closed in 1990. The facility is visited by tens of thousands of visitors each year from around the world, and has served as a shooting location for a number of movies.

"As far as one of the things that gets Mansfield noticed, it's the reformatory," said Lee Tasseff, president of the Mansfield Richland Area Convention said Visitors Bureau.

Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, 138 Park Avenue West, which hosted the film's 1994 premier, plans to restage the event tonight with a special screening. Tickets cost $10. Doors open at 6 p.m. The film starts at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door and can be purchased online at mansfieldtickets.com/events/detail/277.

On Saturday, a special cocktail reception is scheduled in the prison's central guard room. The event is sold out.

Jodie Puster, of the Mansfield/Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the suggested dress for the cocktail reception is 1940s or '50s-themed apparel.

Gunton will make appearances at the Renaissance Theatre, the Shawshank Woodshop in Upper Sandusky and the reformatory.

Scott Mann, who portrayed the golf pro and Linda Dufresne's lover in the film, will set up at Malabar Farm State Park's Pugh Cabin, where the opening scene was filmed. Jim Kisicki, who portrayed the bank manager, will be at the Huntington National Bank in Ashland, which was Maine National Bank in the movie.

Reformatory tours for the public will run throughout the weekend beginning at 10 a.m. today. Tours cost $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 7 to 17, seniors and members of the military. Audio tours cost an additional $5.

Wagon tours at Malabar Farm State Park begin today, running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Sunday. They will take participants to Pugh Cabin and will get close enough for photos at the oak tree, which must be taken from Malabar Farm State Park's property. The cost is $2. Also, extra Mark Jordan, the manager at Malabar's hostel, will share his experiences in the film from 2 to 3 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday at the hostel. This event is free.

Self-guided tours of other sites are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday, some for a nominal fee. Sites open include the Bissman Building (the film's Brewer Hotel and Portland Daily Bugle); Huntington National Bank (film's Maine National Bank; closed Sunday); Revivals 2 thrift store (film's Trailways Bus Station); Wyandot County Courthouse (setting for Andy Dufresne's trial); and the prison woodshop, where re-enactments and tours are planned in Upper Sandusky.

Information is available online at ShawshankTrail.com for the self-guided Shawshank Trail sites or at the Mansfield/Richland Convention and Visitors Bureau. Visitors also can call the bureau at 419-525-1300 for a brochure. Bright orange Shawshank directional signs will be posted at all sites.

Also, two professors at Ashland University and their students will be in Mansfield this weekend to interview fans at the reunion and get their reactions about visiting the filming sites.

"We're interested in studying fan culture," said Maura Grady, assistant professor of English, who is doing research with Robby Roberson, assistant professor in the Hospitality Management Department.

Spillway Project gets underway in Chagrin Falls

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 31 Agustus 2013 | 00.38

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CHAGRIN FALLS -- Success is brewing in Chagrin Falls and three high school buddies couldn't be happier about their dream project coming to fruition.

On Friday, more than 120 people gathered to watch as the construction equipment took the first whack at one of the buildings. Now, know that what is being saved and renovated is all historic but one or two non-historic buildings are being removed to create a parking area.

Spillway LLC is a development group led by three Chagrin Falls residents -- developer Bob Darden of The Darden Group; Darren Wyville; and Chagrin Falls Firefighter Bill Phillips.

The trio will preserve and renovate as many of the existing 28 buildings in the complex as they can.

"There's going to be two restaurants, very family friendly, a microbrewery with a tap room to sample the beers, we're going to have a small theater for small concerts and movies, plus office space," Darden said.

Redeveloping a part of history has its advantages. The property was placed on the National Historic Registry and recently received a $1.65 million tax credit. The demolition and reconstruction work is underway.

They anticipate, with all the businesses coming in, about 100 jobs to start, permanent jobs, and during the construction, they will probably have 75 construction jobs over the 12-month schedule.

The aim is to keep the historic feeling throughout the complex.

The paper mill began its life back in 1858 and was most recently occupied by Ivex.

Chagrin Falls is a destination place, it always has been. The developers just want to make that star a little bit bigger and include this project.

The Spillway Plan calls for renovation of the existing structure to create the following:

  • Restaurant
  • Microbrewery
  • Mill Pond Lounge
  • Outdoor Plaza
  • Boardwalk and Art Area Multi Purpose Room
  • 16,000 square feet of Office Space
  • Venue for visual and performing arts in its theatre and open spaces.
  • Educational source by providing the history of the last standing example of industrial Chagrin Falls.

Spillway developers are hometown boys raised in Chagrin Falls, but at the same time, they are successful business leaders that have statistics to back their belief in this project.
