CLEVELAND -- Here's a good bet for military personnel and veterans in northeast Ohio: The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland is offering a free buffet meal on Sunday to mark Veterans Day.

The casino, Ohio's first, said military personnel and veterans with a military ID and casino Total Rewards card will receive a free meal at the casino's buffet restaurant.

The offer is good on Sunday until 9 p.m. Brunch is served until 2 p.m. and dinner until 9 p.m.

The Cleveland casino opened in May, Toledo's two weeks later and the Columbus casino debuted last month. Ohio's fourth casino opens next year in Cincinnati.

Obama approaches 'fiscal cliff' days after victory

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 10 November 2012 | 00.38

WASHINGTON  --  President Barack Obama will speak at the White House to set the tone for upcoming talks with congressional Republicans on avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff.

Republicans are drawing a line in the sand against higher tax rates for upper-income earners, seeking to topple the conventional wisdom that the just re-elected Democrat has the upper hand in upcoming negotiations.

The fiscal cliff is a potentially economy-crippling set of tax increases and automatic spending cuts due to hit in January.

Obama faces a tough, core decision: Does he pick a fight and risk a prolonged impasse with Republicans or does he rush to compromise and risk alienating Democrats still celebrating his victory?

Many of his Democratic allies hope Obama will take a hard line when he addresses the matter Friday.

UN: Sandy shows need for action on climate change

Written by
Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS  --  Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says one of the lessons from Superstorm Sandy is the need for global action to deal with future climate shocks.

A new round of global climate talks starts in Doha, Qatar on Nov. 27, and Ban urged nations to reach a binding agreement by 2015 to curtail emissions of heat-trapping gases in order to stop the planet from overheating.

He told the U.N. General Assembly on Friday that it is difficult to attribute any single storm to climate change, but the world already knows that "extreme weather due to climate change is the new normal."

The U.N. saw direct effects of the superstorm, which damaged its headquarters with flooding that shut it down for three days. Electrical components and the U.N. computer system were damaged.

Boehner says debt limit should be part of talks

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

WASHINGTON  -- House Speaker John Boehner says any deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff should include lower tax rates, eliminating special interest loopholes and revising the tax code.

Speaking to reporters Friday, the Ohio Republican insisted that changing the tax code and making it more efficient would lead to greater revenue for the government.

Boehner said he had a brief conversation with President Barack Obama earlier this week as the chief executive and congressional leaders negotiate a way to avoid a fiscal cliff that economists say would plunge the nation into another recession.

Boehner also indicated that raising the debt limit that the government will reach sometime in the spring should be part of any negotiations.
