Investigator: Patients tell of sex abuse inside pain clinic

STOW -- Three women have come forward to complain that their pain management physician sexually abused them inside his office in Stow.

All 3 patients say Dr. James Bressi touched them inappropriately while they were being treated for severe pain resulting from bad backs or other serious medical conditions at the Summit Pain Specialists in Stow.

Dr. Bressi told the Investigator Tom Meyer he's innocent, and that these are just allegations. He refused to answer additional questions, telling the Investigator "it's none of your business."

A patient named Pam said Dr. Bressi was giving her a deep tissue massage when he tried placing his hands his hands where they didn't belong.

"It was almost unfathomable, he would stick his hands into my underpants. He had an erection. He was getting his jollies off, I guess, " she said.

A second patient, Carol, said Dr.Bressi had her lie face down on an examination table. She says Bressi would move around the table, rubbing up against her.

When asked what part of him was touching her hands, she said "his penis."

She called his behavior disgusting.

"He still had his pants on but I could feel it on my hands, rubbing up against my hands. I know what an erection is," she said.

A third patient, Minnie, brought her husband Bill along to an appointment. Minnie was given anesthesia and was unconscious for a back procedure.

She was on an examination table with a wall of curtains surrounding her. But Bill says there was a small crack in the curtains and he couldn't believe what he saw.

"His hands were not on her back. They were on her lower butt area, her private area. I was ready to kill him, " Bill said.

Bill and Minnie said police told them that as many as 27 patients came forward to complain about Dr. Bressi.

A spokesman for the Stow police chief would not confirm that number because the lead detective on the case was unavailable.

But he did confirm that police were investigating complaints from some women.

The 3 patients who spoke with Channel 3 News would have come forward sooner but they feared Dr. Bressi might cut off their badly-needed pain medications and also thought no one would believe them.

They decided to break their silence when they saw a Channel 3 News report on the pain clinic two weeks ago.

Dr. Bressi stopped practicing at Summit Pain Specialists a few months ago. His partner, Dr. Robert Geiger, who's still seeing patients at the clinic, has refused comment.

Stow police are investigating complaints against Dr. Bressi but declined to offer any specific details.

ACLU warns Mayfield Heights police on fake drug checkpoints

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

The American Civil Liberties Union says it has warned Mayfield Heights police about the use of mock drug checkpoints.

In June, officers posted signs on I-271 North instructing drivers that a drug checkpoint was ahead. Officers then waited, pulled over, and searched motorists that exhibited what they deemed was suspicious behavior in response to the sign.

Law prohibits police from using random checkpoints to search drivers or their cars for drugs. A Mayfield Heights assistant prosecutor said in a published story in June that the mock checkpoints were legal and a legitimate effort in the war on drugs. The assistant prosecutor said the city of 19,000 "should be applauded for doing this."

The ACLU doesn't agree.

"Mayfield Heights police may believe they have concocted a scheme that allows them to circumvent the Constitution, but they are mistaken," said ACLU of Ohio Legal Director James Hardiman in a written release. "Americans have a fundamental right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, and courts have been clear that random drug checkpoints like Mayfield Heights' are illegal."

Citing media reports, the ACLU says in its release at least one driver searched as part of the mock checkpoint had only pulled over on the freeway to search for a lost cell phone charger. The ACLU says courts have recognized that motorists may have a variety of reasons to avoid police checkpoints, such as wishing to avoid lengthy delays, or not being subject to police interrogation.

In addition to its letter warning the Mayfield Heights Police Department, the ACLU of Ohio also issued a records request asking for information on the June 24 drug checkpoint, and if law enforcement has any future plans to use similar methods.

Lawyer: Ohio inmate didn't know about late appeal

TOLEDO --  A lawyer in Ohio says a death row inmate who apparently hanged himself over the weekend didn't know his legal team had just received new information about his case that could have delayed his scheduled execution.

Attorneys representing 44-year-old Billy Slagle say they were planning to ask the Ohio Supreme Court on Monday to stop the execution scheduled for Wednesday.

Slagle was pronounced dead early Sunday after he was found in his cell at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution. A coroner says preliminary autopsy results are consistent with suicide.

The Columbus Dispatch first reported that Slagle's attorneys found out late Friday that prosecutors offered Slagle a plea deal before his 1988 trial but that Slagle's former attorneys didn't tell him about the offer.

Autopsy set for Ohio killer found hanged in cell

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 06 Agustus 2013 | 00.38

COLUMBUS --  An autopsy is expected to be performed Monday for a condemned Ohio killer found hanged in his death row cell just three days before his execution.

Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith says 44-year-old Billy Slagle was found early Sunday at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution south of Columbus. He was declared dead about an hour later.

Slagle was sentenced to die for fatally stabling neighbor Mari Anne Pope in 1987 during a Cleveland burglary while two young children were present.

An attorney for Slagle says the defense had hoped to stop his Wednesday execution. Vicki Werneke says the defense had no warning that Slagle might commit suicide.

Mike Ratliff, chief investigator for the Ross County coroner, says the case is under investigation and no initial findings could be provided.

Items removed from Ariel Castro's house

CLEVELAND -- As Ariel Castro begins a life sentence in prison, the effort to tear down the house where he held three women captive is moving forward.

This morning family members, lawyers, and police were on the scene of the house on Seymour Avenue to begin removing items from the house.

Under the plea agreement, some personal items will be turned over to Castro's family. The house will then be demolished.

WKYC's Kim Wheeler reports from the scene that family members found old photographs from when Castro's children were little in the house. They also took guitars and bicycles. Relatives say it's part of the healing process for them.

Castro's attorney, Craig Weintraub, told WKYC at the scene the house will be torn down Wednesday.   The space left by the house will be turned over to the community to be re-used, possibly as a park.

Castro pleaded guilty on July 26 to more than 900 counts including rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder in the abductions of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. The three women were held captive for a decade before being rescued on May 6.

A judge sentenced Castro to life in prison plus 1,000 years. Under the plea deal, Castro signed over the house, most of its belongings and other property  to the county.
