CLEVELAND -- Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed and concerned residents will go door-to-door around E. 93rd Street beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday to warn neighbors about a number of recent murders and an abduction attempt on Cleveland's southeast side.
The group will meet at E. 93rd Street and Prince Avenue at 5 p.m.
Reed and volunteers will distribute flyers with a description of the abduction suspect, safety tips, and details on a community meeting set for April 9.
The April 9 meeting will be hosted by Reed and Councilmembers Phyllis Cleveland and Mamie Mitchell and will include updates and safety tips from the Cleveland Police and Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.
The meeting will be held at the E Prep Woodland Hills Campus, 9201 Crane Avenue near E. 93rd Street and Union Avenue and begins at 6 p.m.
"Women in our community have been murdered in recent weeks and another woman was fortunate to escape from her attacker this past weekend," Reed said.
"All residents in Cleveland's southeast neighborhoods need to be on the looking out for one another and help the Cleveland Police by providing any information or reporting any suspicious activity. We must work together to put a stop to these recent horrific crimes."
Cleveland police, with assistance from the FBI, is currently investigating a kidnapping/gross sexual imposition incident which occurred about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30 in the 2900 block of East 116th Street.
The 20-year old victim reported she was walking to work when an unknown black man approached her from behind, grabbed her, and dragged her toward an abandoned house, where the man assaulted her and attempted to remove her clothing.
The attack was thwarted when a woman and two men drove nearby in a blue Pontiac during the attack and yelled, causing the suspect to run off.
Although, the recent Jasmine Trotter homicide and this crime have similarities, there is no evidence at this time linking the two incidents, police said.
Both incidents and other recent murders in the area remain under close investigation and anyone with information relating to either case is asked to contact detectives in the Homicide Unit or the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit at 216-623-5630.
