Cleveland: Plain Dealer, union reach labor agreement

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Plain Dealer and the union representing the paper's reporters have reached a tentative labor agreement.

According to Newspaper Guild spokesman Harlan Spector, the deal runs through 2019. It puts more money into workers' health care and pension plans and restores part of a previous pay cut. Spector says the paper plans to layoff 58 newsroom employees next year and the agreement allows for five additional layoffs in 2014.

Additionally, it allows for stories from non-union members to appear in the paper.

The full union membership votes on the agreement on Tuesday. The union claims if the deal is not approved 85 workers will be let go.

The Plain Dealer is still facing the prospect of going to a reduced, three-day-a-week publishing schedule. The campaign to save the seven-day-a-week paper is still going.
