CLEVELAND -- In November, Cleveland voters passed Issue 107 amid promises to turn around the city's schools, so we wanted to see first-hand how that is being done.
Channel 3 Education Reporter Kim Wheeler and WKYC Videographer Dan Bowman spent about a month "embedded" in Charles Mooney School on Montclair Avenue.
On the last state report card released, Mooney was in Academic Emergency, the worst rating. The school met 0 of 15 state standards on that report card.
How do you turn it around? A new principal, Brynn Morgan, is now heading up the school. She is a first-time principal but determined to change the outcomes and culture of the school.
"I have wonderful students and staff here, I wouldn't change anything love being here," says Morgan.
In her short tenure, preliminary testing is showing progress and attendance is up, that despite large class sizes, some nearing 50 students per class and 30 percent of the school is considered special needs.
Channel 3 was given unprecedented access to show how you turn around a school that, in the past, had a horrible reputation and dismal test scores.
"It is one of the most important projects I've worked on. It shows everyone what really happens in schools everyday and shows the tremendous hope and success that is being found slowly," Wheeler said.
Wheeler's stories on "Saving Mooney" follows the school's history, challenges and successes Tuesday at 6 a.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.
