CLEVELAND -- It's neighbors helping neighbors as local businesses step up to help their neighbor -- the West Side Market -- after a fire has closed most of the market indefinitely.

On Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 1:00 pm until close, the Five O'Clock Lounge (11904 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio  44107) is hosting a benefit for the vendors of the West Side Market.  Local musicians, including He-Chaw Frunk, Colin Dussault, Kristine Jackson and Austin Walkin' Cane, will be performing throughout the day.  There is a $10 cover charge with all proceeds going to the West Side Market Tenants Association.

For those who cannot attend but would like to make a donation, please make out a check or money order to "United West Side Market Tenants Association" and send it to:

  • The West Side Market
  • 1979 W. 25th St.
  • Cleveland, OH  44113
  • Attn: Jeremiah Wiencek Stand D-12

There is a facebook event page for the benefit: https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/events/426878750721683/

Happy Dog, at West 58th and Detroit Avenue, is donating $1 from each and every hot dog served to employees and market vendors who cannot reopen yet. More details are available on its Facebook page.

The Market Garden Brewery & Distillery is serving a special beer to raise money, starting at 4 p.m. Feb. 1 and running until Tuesday, $1 from every "Market Recovery Lager" sold will go to the Market Vendors Association to help them with their losses.

The produce vendors in the outdoor arcade, along with the West Side Cafe, were able to re-open Friday but none of the vendors inside the building could reopen.

The market is closed until further notice after a small fire destroyed Foster's and Sebastian's stalls and there is heavy smoke and soot damage inside the building.

The West Side Market is celebrating 100 years in business this year.

On Friday, WKYC noted that DeCaro Produce, Greg's Produce, Iskander Produce, Harb Produce and Tony's Produce opened their stands in the outdoor arcade.
