AKRON -- A man is dead following an early morning accident in which the vehicle he was driving went airborne for 70 feet and down an embankment.
Akron Police say the one-vehicle crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday on East Market Street near the Kelly Avenue overpass.
The driver was reportedly traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed in a 1994 Dodge Ram when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Police say the driver then lost control, struck a pole, traveled through some landscaping and went airborne for approximately 70 feet down an embankment onto Kelly Avenue.
Police say the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:57 a.m.
Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, according to police.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says the driver's identity is unknown.
