CLEVELAND --  Demolition began this morning at the site for the new Cuyahoga County Headquarters building.

Crews are tearing down part of the old, vacant Ameritrust complex to make room for a new eight-story building to be built on the site.

More than 700 county workers will call the new building home when it opens. The project is currently scheduled for completion in mid-July 2014.

The county says it will save more than $120 million over 20 years by consolidating offices and workers at the new headquarters complex.

The building is part of an overall $200 million investment by the county into the area of East 9th and Euclid.

Current plans for the historic tower and bank building rotunda at the site include developing retail and living space.

Geis Companies of Streetsboro is handling the construction and redevelopment. The county sold the complex to Geis for $27 million in 2012.

The Ameritrust complex has been owned by Cuyahoga County since 2005. It has been vacant since 1996.

Original plans to convert the tower and complex into county office buildings never materialized, despite the county spending nearly $45 million in taxpayer dollars on the property.
