CLEVELAND -- A man fatally shot an alleged attacker at his home on Cleveland's east side early Monday morning.
The shooting was reported just before 12:30 a.m. in the 900 block E. 178th Street.
When police arrived, they found a man shot in the driveway. That man died at the scene.
Authorities say the preliminary investigation reveals the homeowner and a female were leaving the home and attempting to enter a vehicle when two masked males approached.
It's reported that one of the males was in possession of a handgun, the other had a crowbar.
After striking the homeowner in the head with the handgun, police say the suspect tried pulling him out of the vehicle. At that time, police say the homeowner grabbed a handgun from inside the vehicle and fired multiple times.
The suspect, who returned fire and missed, was struck in the torso.
During the shooting, police say the second suspect stole the female victim's purse and fled the scene.
The homeowner was conveyed to St. Vincent Charity Hospital, where he was treated and released for a laceration to the head. The female victim is not reporting injury at this time.
The homeowner has a CCW permit.
The suspect has not been identified.
Facts of this investigation to be presented to the Prosecutor's Office for review.
