MASSILLON -- The man killed by police and suspected in a hostage situation Sunday evening has been identified as a 28-year-old Shane Allen Ryan, of Canton.
It began around 5 p.m. at the Great Clips on Indian River Road SW in Massillon when Ryan allegedly took a female employee hostage in a back room.
Initial reports indicate he was an estranged boyfriend attempting to visit his ex-girlfriend at work.
She was not there at the time; the victim was reportedly a co-worker.
Other employees and customers were able to escape the store unharmed.
After a standoff that lasted several hours, the suspect was shot and killed by SWAT forces during a rescue attempt around 8 p.m.
The female hostage was unharmed.
Throughout the incident, multiple roads in the area had been closed.
The incident remains under investigation.
