COLUMBUS -- FirstEnergy customers potentially could see millions of dollars in rebates depending on the outcome of an upcoming vote by Ohio utility regulators.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has scheduled a vote Wednesday on whether the Akron-based utility overpaid for renewable energy credits and passed those excess costs on to customers. Commissioners could require customer rebates.
Portions of audits detailing the estimated amount of the overcharges have been blocked from public view because of confidentiality claims by the company. That has meant other parties in the case, including FirstEnergy competitor American Electric Power-Ohio and the Ohio Consumers' Counsel representing utility ratepayers, couldn't discuss the figures.
One analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council estimated the amount of the excess payments to be between $96 million and $126 million.
